The great Australian outback – A must-visit destination
If there is one country that stands out from the rest as the most happening destination for all kinds of tourists, Australia surely qualifies for the title. Brimming with enthusiasm from every nook and corner, it is virtually an entertainment and lifestyle hub for travellers. Following are some the 'hot spots' of the country, so to speak.
Flinders Ranges: The eye-catching red and purple folds of this natural majestic wonder, which is also the largest mountain range in south Australia, situated north west of Adelaide. It is a haven for bushwalkers and artists, and rises from the northern end of the Spencer Gulf, running 400 km north into the outback. As a geological formation, it remains unparalleled, with only very few sites in the world coming even close to half of its splendour. Flinders Range also houses a wildlife sanctuary, and is a great place to be for campers, caravaners and travellers. The best time to visit is winter and early spring, even though other seasons do pack the punch in their own way as well! Following the occasional spell of good rains, the entire countryside is filled with wild-flowers. In case one travels during the summers, day time can have high temperatures, but nights are relatively cool and comfortable.
Ulura-Kata Tjuta National Park: Another one of the world's greatest natural attractions, the Ulura-Kata Tjuta National Park is owned by the Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), and the traditional and official owners, the Pitjantjatjara and Yankuntjatjara Aboriginal peoples (who refer to themselves as Anangu), although it is leased to Parks Australia. Close to 500,000 visitors travel here every year, spending 1-2 days on an average. Situated 445 kms away from the town of Alice, the long drive is worth the numerous activities that are one offer. The only accommodation is at the Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort), located 4km from the park boundary. The aborigines are established to service an area that is renowned for its aboriginal significance. Tours are run by the Anangu, and are considered the best means to explore the wonders of this national park.
Sydney: Rightly referred to as Australia's oldest, largest and most diverse city, Sydney is famous the world over for its gorgeous harbour. There are sandstone headlands, bays where one can laze around and remarkable surf beaches for all water sports enthusiasts. One can sail under the Harbour Bridge on a yacht, have a self-proclaimed horseback tour through the Centennial Park, or sink into the ambiance of the Bondi surf. Besides the beaches and harbours that are brimming with activity almost all throughout the year, even the street cafés have their share of action. Although most Australians residing in other parts of the country, write off Sydney as nothing more than 'all show and no substance', the legacy of the Irish and British convicts who made this city is definitely a story worth telling.
