Will the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx or Vista HCx work in Southern Vermont?
Also, do either of these have a feature that allows you to save where you've been (like to save where i've been camping or hiking on a trail) Thanks for answers!
Either one will do well. I use my Vista HCx in Minnesota and Wisconsin and have used it into Canada.
The new H (high sensitivity) receiver even picks up the WAAS signal strong enough to improve the reading and to read under tree cover.
The location on earth doesn't really matter for the main GPS signal since the satellites use polar orbits. The WAAS signal is from geostationary satellites that are over the equator near the US with a poor signal in the north and none elsewhere in the world.
The Vista has a couple extra features that may or may not be useful to you such as the magnetic compass that can tell you which way you are pointed when standing still (GPS needs to calculate the direction between different locations to act as a compass) or an enhanced altimeter.
The x means that both of them use a micro SD card to eXpand the memory. With a 1 gig card, you can have roads for all of the US and Canada plus a lot of stored tracks. Topo maps take up a lot more space but you can fit most of the US on a card.
All of the etrex family will store up to 10,000 points of where you have been in it's internal memory plus 10 tracks with fewer points (it will automatically convert the main memory into the saved tracks when you tell it to).
The x models will also allow you to record your tracks to the micro SD card with effectively unlimited numbers of points (it will break it into seperate files every 24 hours). These files cannot be viewed in the GPS but can be transferred to a computer for viewing and editing. I love that feature for long weekends or for high resolution mapping of trails. 10000 points is only 8 hours at my usual 3 seconds per point recording level.
