Getting your pound of flesh - how to make your UK pound go further when you relocate to Rhodes
I have just read an article about the difficulties that some British expats with a UK income are having surviving abroad owing to the strong value of the Euro at the moment. One couple, sadly, had even moved back to the UK because they simply could not survive in Crete on their UK pension. The good news was that they made a profit on the sale of their home in Crete because of the high ratio of Euro to Pound but, as they said, they would rather have stayed in Greece!
The article did say that although there appears to be a mass exodus of British pensioners from Spain and France because of the strong Euro, expats on the Greek islands such as Rhodes are faring much better. Certainly life in Rhodes does not have to be so expensive. With a little adaptation on our part and with a watchful eye on how our Greek friends and neighbours live, the cost of living can still be relatively cheap in Rhodes, even in today’s ever-rising price world.
If you take a stroll around the Medieval Town of Rhodes on a summer’s evening and take a peak through the Greek residents’ open doors, you might be shocked by the contents. Most homes contain a small bed (or even a sofa bed), a dining table and chairs and a TV – and not much else. Occupants often sit outside, either on their doorsteps or on rickety chairs, enjoying the evening breeze and drinking from un-matching glasses or chipped mugs and chewing on watermelon seeds. Why? I don’t think the locals would understand the question – they simply don’t need more. And they couldn’t be more hospitable people to boot, quite willing to share whatever little they have. The shame for them would be in not giving, not in not having.
And then there’s food. You’re not alone if you still hunt for PG Tips or jars of Marmite in the supermarket – I once lived on an island where the British Corner Shop was doing a roaring trade with customers who couldn’t live without Bird’s Eye Fish Fingers and Shake’n’Vac! Some Brits actually bought all their groceries there.
And that’s great if you can afford it. If you can’t, just look to the locals for guidance. Whether you eat in or out, you can eat and drink at very reasonable prices in Rhodes. If you are eating in, forget the daily meat-and-two-veg (especially frozen or tinned) regime twice a day. Stick to unpackaged goods like dried beans and lentils which make fantastic, filling soups in the winter and great baked dishes in the summer. Buy fruit and vegetables that are in season or, better still, buy a property in Rhodes with a garden and grow your own! Stuff vegetables with rice and herbs rather than adding meat and stop buying name brand products and try the local makes.
Choose to buy a house in a location where there is natural air conditioning or thick walls to keep you warm in winter. Socialise more and share the cost of heating or AC. If you are buying a new property try to get a solar panel installed from the outset and have a “three-phase” electricity meter installed for cheaper night rates.
Is the Pound to Euro rate really keeping you from relocating and enjoying this wonderful life in Rhodes? If you learn to live the Greek way perhaps you won’t ever have to think about it.
