Domestic Flights in India and the expanding fleet size
The number of domestic flights in India is on the rise and each airline plans to add more flights to its already existing fleet. One main reason for this is because travel industry is facing the biggest boom and more and more Indians are choosing to travel via the airways over rail and road.
This is because not only is air travel more fast and convenient, but even the ticket fares are more or less the same as the train fares. People find it more convenient both in terms of time as well value for money while traveling through the airways. they are no longer hesitant in exploring this new option of travel.
With such a vast market opportunity available, airlines are looking forward to expanding big time. Each low cost airline in India is facing huge passenger traffic and they are therefore buying more and more fleets.
Air India express already has a fleet size of 21 Boeing 737-800 aircrafts (as on May 2010). GoAir has 10 Airbus A320-200 aircrafts in service and another 10 on order (as of January 2011). Indigo airline has 39 Airbus A320-200 in service, and another 91 orders of the same (as of January 2011). It has also ordered 150 Airbus A320 NEO. JetLite has 9 Boeing 737-700, 9 Boeing 737-800 and 1 Bombardier CRJ200 in service. They have 6 orders of Boeing 737-800 (as of November 2010). Jet Konnect has a fleet of 6 ATR 72-500 and 2 Boeing 737-800. SpiceJethas a fleet of 21 Boeing 737-800, 5 Boeing 737-900ER and they have 33 orders of Boeing 737-800 and 30 orders of Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 (as of December 2010).
With such large fleet size, Indian domestic travel is apparently having its own Christmas time.
