Differences between Flush Mount and Semi-Flush Mount Light Fixtures
Depending on the amount of light you want in the room, the height of the ceiling and the way you want the room to look, you can choose between flush mount and semi-flush mount light fixtures. Flush mount light fixtures, as the name suggests, remain flush with the ceiling. The bulb is covered by the bowl that holds it. Since there is no scope for the heat generated to escape, one will have to install bulbs of low wattage.
The semi-flush mount is similar to the flush mount but will be extended a few inches beyond the ceiling. Every room requires a different amount of light. For example, a kitchen will require more light than the bedroom. Keeping this factor in mind, you should choose between the flush and the semi-flush mounts. You can use bulbs with relatively higher wattage for semi-flush mount compared to flush mount fixtures.
Flush mount light fixtures suit well for ceilings of any height. Since semi-flush lights extend a little into the room, they are not suitable for low ceilings. These lights can be used in coat closets too. As flush mount light fixtures use low wattage lights, more number of lights will be required in the room.
For replacing a bulb, in a flush mount light fixture, you will have to take the fixture apart. Whereas, the semi-flush light fixture will have a gap through which you can replace the bulb with ease. You can use these lights to bring some item on the wall to focus, like a painting.
While both the lights look good and can be used with dimmers to save power, each comes with its own advantage and disadvantage. The most important is the low wattage bulb requirement of flush mount light fixtures and the ease of bulb replacement in the semi-flush fixtures. If you are good with tools the semi flush shouldn’t be a problem. if you need lot of lighting, you may want to go with the semi flush kind or have more number of flush mount light fixtures in the area.
Creative designs are available in both kinds of fixtures. While some semi flush fixtures are fitted with a central rod, others could have a little sway. The flush mounts are fixed and don’t sway. They are available in a variety of designs to go with every possible decor.
