My GPS Won't Get A Lock, Help!!!!?
Hey guys I just got the Holux - GPSmile 52 Plus. This is my second GPS system. I live in the Bronx (NYC) and for some
reasons it takes forever to get a signal on both GPS. I got the second one thinking something was wrong with the first. It takes like 45 minutes to get a lock, which by then I already got where I needed to be. There other times where it just picks up right away (very rarely). I just want to know what are the factors that come in play. Is it because I live in a city? pollution? someone please explain this to me and what that hell
can I do to make this work
First I would check the spec of the GPS module. Currently, majority of the GPS manufacturers use SiRF3 which reponse time should be less than a minute. But due to internal circuit noise/interferendce it can take bit over a minute. There may be some products out there that may use older version of GPS engine which produce response time you stated but 45 minute is horrible even with older GPS chipset.
GPS signal is very weak so you should install it so that device have clear view of sky or you can search for external GPS antenna.
From symptom you described, it may be battery or memory reset. There are several type of response time suggested my manufacturer (cold-start, warm-start, hot-start). These spec describe reponse time as to GPS data from previous use. Cold-start takes the longest since module have no recent data of GPS. May be module battery is dead or shorting the memory cell so every power up is cold-start.
Device actually need minimum of 3 satelites to locate your position (x,y,time). On fourth satelite, y (elevation) component kicks in.
