Why Does My Dog Get Hot Spots?
In order to reduce the likelihood of your dog getting hot spots or prevent your dog from getting hot spots, you can take these actions:
1.Clipping the dog's hair short in hot environments and in all environments during summer.
2.Bathing your dog frequently with a medicated product.
3.Using a strong flea control program.
4.Cleaning your dog's ears regularly.
5.Expressing your dog's anal glands, if needed/as needed.
Dogs with dense undercoats or longer hair are more likely to get hot spots because they are caused by an allergic reaction to something. Both indoor and outdoor dogs can get hot spots and the chances of getting them are much less likely in colder geographies or during the winter. Some of these antigens are insect bites (usually fleas), food allergies, mites, ear infections, poor grooming, burs, and anal gland disease.
Hot spots are also known as acute moist dermatitis and are generally located on the dog's head, along his chest, or over his hip. You usually don't notice them until your dog has started to obsessively lick, bite or scratch the area, irritating the already inflamed skin. When you look at the lesions, they will be moist, raw, inflamed and hairless circular lesions. They are actually quite painful to your pooch. Hot spots can spread or grow really quickly and have been known to change from the size of a quarter to a diameter of eight inches in a matter of hours. In order to keep the area from getting worse, you have to keep the dog from irritating the lesions. Sometimes you can do this by clipping the dog's nails or putting socks on their hind feet. If the dog persists, you may have to put one of those collars that look like a lampshade over your dogs head to keep him from biting or licking the hot spots.
Treating hot spots requires a two-fold approach. First, you have to stop the sores from spreading. When treating the lesions, you'll need to trim the hair around the sores, wash the area with an antiseptic, and apply antibiotics or cortisone if prescribed by your veterinarian.
Next, you have to determine the underlying cause of the allergy or hot spot and remove it or reduce it. If the underlying problem was caused by a flea invasion, which led to an ear infection, which led to hot spots, you have to apply a flea treatment and also antibiotics to clear up the ear infection. If the hot spot was the result of an anal gland infection, you may have to express your dog's anal glands to remove the problem. If allergies triggered the hot spots, you'll have to look at what items are in your home triggering the allergies. Dog allergies are similar to human allergies in that they can be reduced by frequent vacuuming and dusting.
Hot spots aren't fun for either you or your dog, but they are not a long-term disease and should not cause any permanent damage.
