Mio has pioneered the new interface of satellite navigation Spirit
When Mio, a global market leader in satellite navigation, has decided to design and manufacture a new software interface for all portable GPS navigators, conducting a thorough market research was obvious. Mio has nevertheless adopted an unconventional approach by soliciting large groups of users in the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States.
The study focused on three main aspects: the future, according to the users of the market for GPS satellite navigation, the browser interaction outside of the car and improvements. Meanwhile, the GPS receivers were used to support up detailed information on their ease of use and design qualities.
This rigorous study has identified a large number of user profiles used to target different consumer groups and highlight the opportunities the new interface. The information gathered was transmitted to the design teams responsible for developing a new software product with real users, essentially defined the product, are the specific target.
The instructions given to teams of designers was to ensure that the software interface is faster and it can more easily find the desired destination. The aircraft was also becoming more interactive so that different groups of users can access a wealth of information specific to their GPS needs. This user-centered interface should allow faster access and more direct information than any other competing product. The project, named Spirit, has called for teams to adopt a million new thinking in order to provide the user with a satellite navigation experience unmatched.
This first phase of the project was followed by the integration of different software components into an entity. It was a feat since each software functionality was treated as a separate application with GPS maps and specific programming. The instructions of the original user as the needs of future consumers have also been satisfied. Furthermore, after assembling the various features, it was necessary to adapt the usability of new technology while seeking to create a compact and affordable for the consumer market.
With all the efforts of design and user participation necessitated by its development, software Spirit should quickly become the benchmark in the portable GPS market. This approach also demonstrates that to remain the leader of a sector increasingly demanding as that of the GPS companies like Mio has to invest heavily in research and development and ask their designers to work harder.
