USB the future is here
USB 3.0, the new peripheral connection protocol that allows for data transfers that reach speeds of 400 MB per second and beyond, is starting to become more common in the consumer market. As with every protocol, this technology is slowly being phased into common use and is currently available only on some desktop motherboards and certain select laptops. This leaves consumers in a bind. For those looking to trade up laptop models, is USB 3.0 worth waiting for, and for those with desktops, is it worth the extra cost?
<h4>Laptops - Light at the End of the Tunnel</h4>After long delays, USB 3.0 has finally made its way to the laptop market with the launch of a few different high-end alternatives. Unfortunately for the everyday consumer, mid-level models are still stuck with USB 2.0. Industry reports indicate that USB 3.0 support will reach the mainstream in a launch timed to take advantage of new processor platforms. Based on Intel's development cycle, this will most likely occur in Quarter 1, 2012, so laptop consumers are facing about a year's worth of waiting. Is it worth waiting a year or more for this technology?
In the laptop world, USB ports are commonly used for peripherals such as mice, usb memory sticks, external hard drives, etc. USB 3.0's massive speed benefits will only make much difference for laptop users who commonly transfer large quantities of data from the laptop's hard disk drive to an external disk. A user transporting a few PDFs or documents on a flash drive or playing music from an external dvd rewriter would notice next to no difference. For these users, it is not worth the wait. Unless data transfer is a major priority, stick with USB 2.0 for now, as it is still a capable and efficient standard.
<h4>Desktops - The Future is Here</h4>USB 3.0 has been around for several months on high-end desktop motherboards and is now becoming available through major end manufacturers. Users must pay somewhat of a premium, however, in order to buy a machine with the newest technology. Since desktops usually form the backbone of a home network and function as media storage devices, servers, and control centres, high speed data transfer to storage drives is enticing indeed.
As enormous hard disk drives have become more and more common and media formats have ballooned the disk capacity necessary for a fully stocked digital media library, long file transfers have become unavoidable. At approximately ten times the speed of USB 2.0, USB 3.0 is a worthy investment indeed. One USB 3.0 capable desktop should be enough for now, but before long, this new standard will be the only game in town!
