Caribbean Holidays – When And Where To Go
With 26 different countries to choose from, planning a holiday to the Caribbean can be a daunting task. Each country has its own identity and culture and offers something different from the rest, but how do you go about choosing when and where to go to get the most out of your trip away? A good way to narrow down your options is to look at the time of year you want to travel. The Caribbean islands enjoy their best weather during the beginning and end of the year when temperatures aren’t too high and there is little rainfall to spoil your sunbathing.
January is a great time to visit Jamaica. At this time of year it benefits from a clear and mild climate with temperatures averaging at around 25oC. January is perfect for enjoying the sunny conditions, but without it being too hot to move or too rainy to lie on the beach. Being able to get out and about and not sat in an air conditioned room means you can experience what this country really has to offer - its culture, dramatic scenery and rich history.
For an ideal Caribbean holiday in February, Cuba is an opportunity not to be missed. To really get the most out of Cuba you need to stay in its capital Havana where the sunny and dry days are perfect to explore this vibrant and historic city and the nearby beaches. Enjoy a tour of Havana in a 1950s classic American car, stroll the streets of old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and tour the cigar factories to hear about the fascinating history of Cuba’s most famous export.
If you are planning on going away in November, there is no better place than the Bahamas. This chain of 700 islands southeast of Florida enjoys sunny days and cooling winds in November which are ideal conditions for lazing by the warm Caribbean seas. If you want a break from the beach, the Bahamas is an ideal location to see bottlenose dolphins. Visitors to the islands can see these incredible creatures in enclosed lagoons or on specialist tours to experience them in the wild.
December sees the British Virgin Islands and the island of Dominica come into their own. Tortola, the largest of the 60 islands that comprise the British Virgin Islands, enjoys temperatures averaging at around 29, but has cooling trade winds to keep it comfortable. Tortola has some stunning beaches and coral reefs to explore as well as secluded coves and a carefree and casual charm that makes it hard to come back home.
Dominica is an island famed for having the best preserved ocean rainforest in the Caribbean. December is its driest period although rain falls year round in the mountains due to the topography and vegetation. Caribbean holidays on Dominica are a nature lover’s delight and there are plenty of activities to keep holidaymakers entertained, from hiking and rainforest exploration to horse riding and whale watching.
