Fishing Buddies and the Newly installed Fishing Navigator
As I awoke this morning and met the sunrise of another beautiful day. I was already thinking of all the things I needed to get done here at the house so I could get over to a friends place. He has been fixing up his older Fisher boat and had purchased a new Fishfinder. I eagerly volunteered to give a hand installing it because that meant that later on we would have to get to the lake and put it to the test, with the ultimate reason being able to do some fishing. He had purchased the Garmin 400C Dual beam Fishfinder from a great website at a very reasonable price. I've got to tell you I was almost as excited as him to get to see this thing in action.
It wasn't long till he was ringing me on the phone to see where I was, or better yet why I wasn't already there. He had the new toy out on the table and was checking out the manual trying to get a jump on all the bells and whistles it has. He started describing to me some of the features like the dual beam transducer set at 45 and 14 degrees for maximum freshwater performance. The UltraScroll with high rep rate sonar to give lightening fast screen updates and the split zoom display that offers such a closer look at fish and bottom structures it would be like having a underwater camera. I had to stop him from going further. I told him that I had just a few more things to do and I would be right over as I hung up the phone giggling at his enthusiasm.
It was early afternoon by the time I arrived at his house and the wind had picked up some. Not uncommon for northern Colorado. He was just finishing up installing a new pedestal seat mount on the upper deck area of the boat. I helped him finish that, then we started laying out the lines for the transducer and speed sensor. Being an older boat there where already holes in the transom where other transducers had previously been mounted. Some of the holes lined up with the new transducer so with a little silicone to insure no leakage we plugged the remaining holes and completed the mounting. Running the wires took some time to get them routed out of the way and secured to the inner walls of the compartment and the rest of the way to the dashboard. Once that was done we hooked up the power-data wires and started on the swivel-tilt mount for the unit on the dash. All in all it took us about an hour to complete the installation and we were then on our way to the lake.
Once on the water and the unit turned on, I swear we needed someone else there to drive the boat. We were both enthralled with setting up all the functions and features and with it's UltraBright 4" diagonal screen and streamlined user interface it made it a breeze to set up even from my position in the passenger seat or at-least on some of the seat. With it's alarms for fish size, shallow water, deep water and low battery voltage it quickly gave us a warning that we weren't paying attention and had drifted into shallow water. Since we were there we thought we had better do some fishing before night would fall and we would have to leave. Although night fishing would be easy with our new navigator since it comes with a new night mode feature that provides optimum viewing in low light conditions and back-lit keyboard to make any needed adjustments. But tonight we wouldn't be needing it because we both had to work early the next day. We fished for a couple hours and really loved the split zoom feature that gave us such a good view of the structures, that our favorite catches didn't have a chance hiding from us. We returned all the fish to the water as we felt almost guilty now that we have the upper hand with the ultimate navigator to show us the way. We made our way back to the trucks and unloaded the gear from the boat as I told my friend that it was a well spent investment for his boat. As we shook hands and parted our way I couldn't help thinking it was another great day to be out with friends fishing.
