Superconducting Cable could suggest a resolution to our energy crisis
Utilities nationwide are facing a bind: As the demand for power increases, so does public resistance to the wiring of new power lines. In upstate New York, companies are taking steps to find possible quick fixs to these concerns. In fact, several companies have partnered to work on a promising new technology that may help meet increasing pursuit for electrical power without the need for new lines.
The world's first in-grid superconducting power cable has gone online in Albany, New York, on July 20, 2006. The 350-meter underground cable-a demonstration of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) applications to increase electric power transmission and distribution-is operating at 34,500 volts, with a nominal current carrying capacity of 800 amperes.
The cable links the Riverside and Menands substations of the North Albany Service Center at National Grid.
The system at the Albany cable project currently uses first-generation HTS wire, but in a later phase, scheduled in about a year, a portion of the system will be interchanged with cable using second-generation conductor to further demonstrate its viability. The second-generation HTS is considered more cost-efficient and commercially viable than first-generation HTS.
A piece of Long Island, N.Y.'s power grid has received an upgrade to superconducting cable installed at a major interconnection point in the system. The 2,000-foot long cable is the longest installation of high temperature superconductor, or HTS, cable in the world and the only HTS installation running at transmission voltage.
The energy industry is constantly looking for new solutions to growing fitness demands. Many of these ideas come from companies and educational institutions in research and development departments. There solutions are expect to come in the form of
- Storage technologies like automobiles, high efficiency batteries,
- Generation technologies such as wind, solar, wave energy, geothermal
- Efficiency like energy star products
- Transmission technologies such as high efficiency cables
The key to improving our energy profile is awareness and government support. Although there have been several objections to this due to the high cost of government, renewable energy advocates point to the hugs subsidies that the government gives to oil -- billions of dollars go to wars to keep oil distribution lines open. If some of this money were to be diverted to energy research, oil would not not be so badly needed.
